I have had lots of inquires lately asking what an adventure session really is, and what to expect. So, I thought it would be fun to share with you some tips on how to prep for an adventure session:
DRESS LIKE A (comfortable) ROCKSTAR:
Choose outfits that make you feel like YOU. This is SO important because if you are constantly pulling and adjusting your outfit, you are not staying focused on the moment and will end up frustrated by the end of the session. I recommend choosing pieces that flow nicely as you move/walk. My main goal at every adventure session is movement. I always want my couple moving/swaying/kissing/loving, whether that calls for running through the canyons or getting swooped up for a piggy back ride, clothes that allow you to move freely is so crucial. If you are at a loss for outfits and color schemes, just ask me! Guys. THAT. IS. WHAT. I. AM. HERE. FOR. I would rather hold your hand and literally dress you in a way that is flattering, comfortable and photographs well, verses you being overwhelmed and choosing something you aren’t happy in.
MAKE A DAY OUT OF IT :
This shouldn’t feel like work! Take the day off, explore the area, and plan a fun lunch somewhere. Try to do something together before we meet that strengthens your feelings towards one another. Cuddle in bed, go out for breakfast, hit up your favorite beach — anything that brings you two closer together! Avoid running errands, wedding planning, paying bills or other activities that might stress you out. I want you to show up blissfully in love and as relaxed as possible! Make this entire day about the two of you and put off your to-do list until tomorrow Think of this as a fun hike with your new bestie (cough, me!) that just so happens to have her camera with her. You are not professional models and I don’t expect you be. I just want you to have fun and capture you two together in a place you love.
WEATHER CONDITIONS:
Listen. I’ll shoot in any type of weather. Rain, sleet, snow, wind, sun. If you’re game, I’m game. The only conditions where there will be a chance of rescheduling is if the weather turns dangerous (lightening) Otherwise, I have the correct gear to safely photograph you in any other conditions!
If the weatherman is calling for rain, don’t immediately jump to reschedule! Rainy photos bring a totally different element to your session and can result in some epic, intimate shots. Plus, you get bragging rights because you did your adventure session in the frickin’ rain and were totally all #wethairdontcare.
Plus! Have a BOMB hair and makeup artist who can work in any kind of weather. Alex, you da real MVP.
EMBRACE IMPERFECTION:
I'm a big fan of imperfection. Foggy weather, wind messing up your hair, mud on your shoes, these things tell a story and give us a real experience. If I ask you to dip her, and you lose your balance and start to fall, just roll with it (literally) those in-between moments are IT! Seriously, that millisecond of raw, genuine laughs is GOLD. There is a reason we call them adventure sessions!
This adventure took place at Providence Canyon State Park: https://gastateparks.org/ProvidenceCanyon - what a cool little hidden gem! Right smack dab in the middle of Georgia! Most people have no idea this little red rock desert gem exists, but man it is underrated.
Denver + Tyler are some amazing friends of mine, and I was over the moon excited when Denver reached out interested in an adventure session. I have been wanted to travel and shoot at this location for months now, and when I proposed the idea of it, she was immediately sold! (my kinda gal!) I loaded up the best hair + makeup artist on the planet, Alexandra Hayes (IG handle below!) and hit the road!
We had about a 2 mile hike to the canyon floor, endured a heat index over 100 all afternoon, witnessed a pop up lightening storm (it was NO joke), we shot in the rain (because, adventure, HELLO) and made some awesome memories! Adventure sessions are not always peaches and cream. They really are hard work, require lots of planning, tons of snacks and water, and still you are never fully prepared for the weather. However these two stuck it out like amazing troopers and I couldn’t be happier with their session and photos! Thank you two for being so wonderful and having the best time for our adventure. Here is to many more!
